In 1928 Windhoek’s main street, Kaiser Street (now Independence Avenue), was the first road to be tarred. Ten years later the next one, Gobabis road (now Sam Nujoma Drive), was tarred. Today most of Windhoek’s total road network of over 500 km is tarred.
Windhoek’s three main access roads (from Rehoboth, Gobabis and Okahandja) are tarred according to ‘the all-weather high standard specification’. This means that such a road should be able to withstand the largest possible flood to be expected in fifty years. The road is designed to carry traffic moving at 120 km/h and should last for 20 years.
Namibia has an extensive network of tarred roads, which stretches from the Orange River in the South to the Kunene and Okavango Rivers in the North. These are supplemented by over 25 000 km of gravel, 1200 km dirt, and 283 km salt roads (the latter at the coast
Windhoek has two airports: Eros on its outskirts for smaller craft, and the Windhoek International Airport 42 km east of the city. A number of foreign airlines operate to and from Windhoek. Air charters and helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft rentals are also available.
Hosea Kutako International Airport (HKIA)
HKIA situated 45 kilometres outside Windhoek, handles well over 400 000 passengers a year. HKIA, Namibia’s only international Airport has one runway without capacity limitations. This International Airport directly connects bi-weekly to each of the following world’s leading hubs: London (Heathrow), Frankfurt, and Munich. Southern Africa’s hub, Johannesburg, is only a two-hour flight away, from where one can connect to over 50 international destinations worldwide, including the world’s popular cities. World-renowned airlines such as South African Airways, LTU, the base carrier – Air Namibia are calling daily at HKIA, whilst TAAG Angolan Airlines has bi-weekly turnarounds.
Eros Airport
Eros is the busiest airport in terms of aircraft movements. This city airport, which has become an ideal destination for regional traffic, handles well over12 000 aircraft movements; majority of which are light aircraft. Primarily, limitations such as runway length, noise ( given its location within the city) and air space congestion are some of the reasons, which have kept Eros from realising its full potential to become a leading airport for point-to-point traffic favoured by today’s emerging “no-frills” airlines. Most of Namibia’s charter operators have Eros as their base.
